PAOLA
The “Unity Bridge” which is crossing over the former Corradino Hill, connects the Corradino residential area with central Paola. The footbridge is composed of two trusses of approximately 25 metres in length, spanning across Dom Mintoff Street. The steel structure is composed of a series of circular hollow sections forming the trusses, all of which were prefabricated off site. The bridge was delivered and assembled on site in three portions, thus minimising impact during installation on the main arterial road. The bridge deck is composed of a composite system with corrugated steel sheets and an overlying concrete slab.
At the abutments, the deck is supported by bearing pads which allow for the longitudinal movement of the bridge. To retain the road fully functional during works, the concentrated loads resulting at the abutments are supported onto a system of micro-piles located behind the original retaining wall running along either side of Dom Mintoff Street.
A stainless-steel railing made of perforated plates complements the royal blue finish to the bridge, tying in with the surrounding landscaped areas on either side.
The project also includes improvement works to the originally disused land located on the residential side of the footbridge, comprising of soft and hard landscaping allowing for a fully accessible route to the bridge. An improved access to the existing garden on the opposite side is also created.
JLZ+MBF Architects developed the client’s initial designs for Unity Bridge and led an integrated team for the design and build of the footbridge and surrounding landscaped areas. The project team also advanced with the entire structural design and detailing, fabrication and delivery of this project.
