UNIVERSITY OF MALTA
The Transdisciplinary Research and Knowledge Exchange (TRAKE) complex at the Msida campus is an ambitious project conceptualised by the University of Malta. The project encompasses a state-of-the-art multi-storey building with laboratory facilities, seminar and conference rooms, researcher study spaces and additional amenities.
JLZ+MBF Architects have been engaged for the design and build of this development, comprising of five floors above ground and a further four below ground level. The project includes also extensive landscaped areas forming roof gardens over the underlying basement level, together with recreational spaces and a walkway linking to the adjacent pedestrian passages around the university.
The structural system is composed of a reinforced concrete frame structure. The central core, which runs along the entire height of the building, provides the required lateral stability to seismicity and other loads such as wind.
The project required meticulous detailing to ensure seamless integration between the structure and surrounding landscape, together with the extensive MEP services required for a project of this scale.
JLZ+MBF Architects developed the detailed construction and structural design and detailing. We led the team as project architects to transform the TRAKE building from concept to construction.
