Marsa

The growing demand for sports facilities in Malta has driven the development of the Gymnasium Project, a major extension to the Marsa Sports Complex. Covering approximately 3,000 square metres, the design maximizes utility through a multi-storey layout that increases the usable floor area. Facilities include netball courts, spectator stands at roof level, squash courts, gymnasiums, multipurpose halls, a cafeteria, changing rooms, and various ancillary spaces.

The project makes a bold architectural statement with a 90-metre-long, 9-metre-tall glazed curtain wall that wraps around the building, creating an avant-garde contemporary aesthetic while flooding the interiors with natural light. The remaining exterior surfaces are finished with ventilated composite aluminium cladding to ensure optimal thermal performance in Malta’s climate.

A particularly complex challenge was the site’s geological condition—15 metres of valley silt overlaying the ground, with the structure located just above mean sea level. This required an extensive foundation system comprising over 90 concrete piles. Due to the depth and proximity to sea level, many of the piles had to be driven below sea level.

To address the risk of soil liquefaction during seismic events—which could compromise pile stability—the foundation system incorporates inclined and anchored piles socketed into the underlying substratum rock. These are tied together with structural elements capable of absorbing lateral forces, thus ensuring long-term stability and seismic resilience.

JLZ+MBF Architects served as the Project Architects and Structural Engineers on behalf of the works contractor, overseeing coordination across multiple expert disciplines throughout the construction phase. Their role was crucial to the successful integration of complex structural systems with the project’s architectural vision.
